![]() ![]() And of the six that weren't, only Need for Speed ($204m on a $66m budget), Tomb Raider ($274m back in 2001) and The Angry Birds Movie ($347m on a $75m budget) were actually hits. Of the nine video game movies that have topped $200 million global, three of them were Resident Evil movies. Heck, Fox and Regency's Assassin's Creed cost way too much at $125m, but a $240m worldwide gross makes the seventh-biggest video game movie ever worldwide. And the top two grossers ( Warcraft and Angry Birds) were both from last summer. Three of the five video game movies that crossed $300m global all came out between May of last year and January of this year. With all the talk about 2016 being the year the video game movie finally "arrived," it kinda did over the last 12 months, at least financially. The film didn't do terribly well in North America, but a $322 million-and-counting gross for a $40m-budgeted film means everyone made some money here and there. Some movies get better with age, and surprisingly this is one of them.Sony and Screen Gems' entire Resident Evil franchise has now earned $1.245 billion over six films, making it the biggest video game franchise ever and the second-biggest horror franchise of all time behind Fox's six Alien movies ($1.260b). It has enough good qualities to make it watchable. Is it a great movie? No, but I don't think it's a bad movie either. But towards the end when again it's like guys with tentacles coming out of their face, or Alice being super powered, it's dumb and the effects are bad. When this is a straight up zombie movie, it's awesome. But the umbrella corporation find them, and they have to make it out alive. She meets up with a group in the Nevada desert, some of whom she had teamed with in the second movie. Here, Alice(who has superpowers) is looking for fellow survivors, as the world has basically been overrun by the t virus. I really liked the way the movie looks when it's in the desert(the only thing I like when I saw it the first time), and it really pops off of Blu-Ray. Now revisiting the movie, I find this to actually be a much better experience, and along with the second movie the best of the series. I found it to be boring, pretentious, and just overall not a very good movie. The first time I watched this was in the theater, and I fell asleep. What is the arc for the movie? Or any character at all? Well, that's enough ranting about a film I could care less about. Iain Glenn is fittingly over-the-top, but why in the world does he turn into a prototypical monster in the end? At that point, the film is expectedly off the rails. She's been a constant bright spot through each of the first three films, but I find it hard to believe that it's enough to give a film like this a positive review. Plus, the zombies (or whatever they are calling the undead creatures) are now able to run around and climb on top of cars and buildings? I don't know about that.ĭo I enjoy seeing Milla Jovovich in this role? Of course. ![]() In fact, I'm not entirely sure what any of the characters were ultimately trying to accomplish.Ĭharacters that I thought were supposed to be important are either non-existent or given anti-climatic deaths. But even with another new setting in the desert (ala Mad Max), the plot never takes any exciting twists and turns. Meanwhile, Alice's life of solitude has apparently given her telekinetic abilities. 'Extinction' picks up a few years after the end of 'Apocalypse' as Alice left her group in hopes of keeping them safe from the remnants of Umbrella Corp, who are tracking Alice in order to produce more of the anti-virus. As hard as I try to get invested in this post-apocalyptic series, the series just keeps getting dumber. ![]() Resident Evil Extinction manages to dumb down the plot, action, and characters since the last film, which is an impressive "accomplishment". ![]()
